Dental floss: How do we choose it?

Dental floss is an important part of daily oral hygiene. With its help, we clean interdental spaces from food debris, thus preventing the development of harmful bacteria. Thus, we also take care of the health of the enamel and the gums, as well as the dental aesthetics. Dental floss can be of different types, so it is important to understand which one is suitable for you.

Types of dental floss

Depending on the manufacturing material, dental floss can be:

Artificial – made of nylon, capron, acetate;

Natural – made of silk. It is less durable than artificial materials.

By type of impregnation:

With wax. Such threads are treated with wax and do not split into several fibers during use. They are convenient for those who start to use dental floss as well as for those who have a large number of narrowed interdentals or spaces.

Without wax. They are not coated with wax, so they can separate into fibers and come into contact with a larger surface of the interdental space, removing the plates and pieces of food.

By shape:

Round – suitable for larger interdental spaces.

Pay – ideal for narrow interdental spaces.

Tape type – these can be used for larger spaces between teeth.

Combined – designed to clean orthodontic structures. Dental threads can be soaked with an antiseptic, fluoride – to prevent caries, as well as various aromatic additives (eg menthol).

The dental floss that suits you can be chosen with your dentist. It can tell you which thread features are appropriate to you depending on the condition of the teeth and the spaces between them. Using regular dental floss ensures complete dental hygiene, which will reduce the need for dental interventions. In addition to caries prevention, this method of cleaning teeth significantly reduces the unpleasant odor of the mouth. Children should be accustomed to the dental floss, because one of the principles on which children’s oral hygiene is based on is the formation of healthy habits at an early age. Schedule a free consultation at the dentist now, dental treatment is more effective, cheaper and painless once done on time.
