Nowadays we can enjoy, when necessary, a dental implant. For many years, the fixed dental prosthesis and the mobile dental prosthesis were the only methods of restoring missing teeth. Research by Swedish physiologist Branemark has conditioned the invention of implants – fixed dental prostheses as an alternative to dental bridges. In Western countries, implantation began to be widely used in the 80’s of the last century.
The dental implant – is an artificial tooth root, usually made of titanium and inserted into the bone. Subsequently, the tooth is made of the implant. Titanium is an inert metal and is not rejected by the body. Successful implantation is very high and reaches up to 97-99% if the operating procedure and sterility of the operator field are strictly respected.
INDICATIONS BY AGE
It is indicated: after 19 years in women and after 21 years in men – when the bone growth period ends. In general, there is no upper age limit. Even at 85-90 years implantation can be successful. The main contraindications: decompensated diabetes mellitus, malignant oncological maladies, severe heart failure or circulatory disease, etc.
– aesthetic – works on implans are identical to natural teeth;
– practical – mobile prosthesis carriers can benefit from fixed prosthesis;
– medical – implants prevent bone resorption and keep the adjacent teeth intact.
Application of implants is performed under local anaesthesia, so the patient does not feel anything during surgery. The region in which the dentist intervenes may be a little edematous for a few days, and the low-intensity pains that may occur are resolved in a few days, usually, with light analgetics. The implants allow the missing teeth to be replaced without affecting the healthy teeth. Most patients do not make a difference between natural teeth and implants because they are perfectly suited to each other.
MAINTENANCE OF IMPLANTS
To maintain a good result is enough to brush your teeth and use dental floss. Your dentist will explain exactly how to do it. Even though until a few years ago the dental implant treatments were not very popular in the Republic of Moldova, mostly because of the high costs and lack of information, we are witnessing an explosion of restorations by this method lately. This is a positive development both in terms of oral health and increasing treatment standards. We encourage you to opt for these treatments whenever indicated by your dentist.
